One day! Just one day is the difference between winners and losers || UPSC titbits
The results of Civil Services Examination 2019 has been published and the media has already started creating its usual row with the popular taglines “Visually challenged women has challenged her fellow students by clearing IAS”, “Son of a daily waged laborer has cleared the toughest exam of the country”, “Daughter of a farmer who doesn’t even have electricity facility has become the light of inspiration to her village”, etc. This post is not against those aspirants who have really worked hard to attain the prestigious post of the country. It is against those critics who easily comment on the aspirants who have not been successful, for not putting enough efforts, without even knowing what the exam is all about.

I am in this field for the past 17 years, have seen all ups and downs, and has faced a lot of such criticisms. Out of that experience, I would like to share a few incidents to clarify all those criticisms. The competitive exams are conducted nation-wide and every year lakhs and lakhs of candidates are appearing for these exams against vacancies which fall within thousand. Undoubtedly the winners who have surpassed the lakhs and get into that final thousand deserves a big salute. But is it true that apart from those thousand the rest of the candidates have not put any effort at all or have invested only little effort?

No. That is not true. Every serious candidate invests his/her best while preparing for the exam but one day, yes just one day plays a vital role in deciding their fate. I would like to share two of the incidents that happened to me which will make people who don’t believe in luck also believe in fate. For years I was trying only the civil services exam and was not ready to even try other exams. But as attempts were fading out I thought of giving a try in Bank examinations. With the knowledge gained in mental ability preparation of Civil services I was able to reach up to the interview level in the very first attempt but could not get through in the final selection because of a shortage in the overall score.

The next attempt which happened to be the last chance for me in Bank examinations I was all prepared and sat for State Bank’s PO exam. I was more confident and was doing the exam very well. You must be knowing that it is an online exam. Just ten minutes left for the termination of the exam and I was just two problems away to reach the winning score. Ten minutes was more than enough and I was about to solve it. Suddenly my computer screen got blacked out and I was in total shock and was unable to find what is actually happening. As I turned to and fro I found all other screens were working except mine. Looked around for the invigilator and found that he is not in the room. I was paralyzed with shock and did not know what to do.

The invigilator entered the room and I started shouting “Sir...sir…” but he without giving a look towards me, assumed that I am asking for a rough sheet, just waved his hand asking me to be quiet and moved fastly towards the other end of the room where the rough sheets have been kept. He did not even listen to me and since others were indulged seriously in the exam I was unable to make more noise. As he approached me I showed my screen after which only he understood the real situation. He immediately informed the technical team of the center and they came to find that only my system was not connected to the UPS. And when they connected and restarted it I found that it was only the system that has stopped but not the timer. I was left out with only 2 minutes more and when I asked for the extra time the invigilator was not ready to allot and also not aware of handling the situation. I missed that exam for the fault for which I was in no way responsible.

The second incident happened during the IBPS PO mains examination. This time I was making sure to check the UPS connection before the exam but tragedy arrived in a different way. That day my session was in the afternoon so I thought of attending the civil services class in the morning because I was well prepared and generally I do not fear exams. As the class got over I was about to pick my purse but lost control over my hand and the purse fell down. I felt very tired and a bit of warmth over my body. So I thought of taking a fresh juice because generally my body temperature gets heated up soon. After taking the juice I arrived at my home and thought of taking a nap since more time was left out.

As I woke up to get ready for the exam I was unable to root my feet over the ground. I could not stand up or walk because of severe knee joint pain. I was not aware of what is actually happening. Suddenly felt like vomiting and was in total fatigue. I smelled that something is wrong and decided to consult a doctor before appearing in the exam. As I approached the hospital a shocking blow was awaiting me there. I was diagnosed with Dengue fever. Not the name Dengue shocked me but the very word fever itself was a great shock to me. Because in the past 35 years of my life I was never diagnosed with fever at all. I requested the doctor to permit me to complete the exam and come back since that was my last attempt but my platelet level was so alarming that the doctor forced me to get admitted immediately. I lost my final chance in the Bank examination.

One day, just one day is the difference between the winners and losers and not the lack of effort or determination as many people think. How much you prepare, how much you hard work, how much dedication you show if that one day is not at your side then the effort you took around for a year will go in vain. But it is totally out of our hands. All we can do is to just try our best and hope for the good. So the unsuccessful candidates need to come with more strength until they achieve their dream, no matter what obstacles come in your way.
