Early release of Dasavataram could have secured me civil service - interesting incident

I am that kind of person who has grown watching cinemas and many movies that I have watched have created a huge impact on me. Movies are the biggest entertainments of my life and beyond that, I have learned a lot of things through movies. Be it psychological, philosophical, or factual I have gained a lot of insights from the flicks. Dasavatharam is one flick which got released on 13 June 2008, if have released earlier in around March month of that year could have secured me a service in UPSC possibly. I would like to share a small interesting narration about it.

In the year 2008, I was selected for the UPSC interview in the month of April and that was my first UPSC interview after two attempts in civil services. The chairman of my interview board was none other than Mr. Balagurusamy, the ‘OOPS’ man who authored the famous book called Object-Oriented Programming with C++ which is the bible of software engineers of those times. Interestingly, it was his first time too as an interviewer for UPSC. When I heard that he is the chairman of my board I was so cool because I was so familiar with him and felt confident.

The interview went quite well and I answered almost to all of the questions except only one. The question was “What is the butterfly effect?”. I was totally blank about it and could not find out whether it is from the field of biology or general knowledge or IT. They asked me to give a try but without knowing nothing about it I was not even ready to make assumptions because I feared that making rough assumptions may end up in stupid answers. So I skipped that question. During those days I did not possess a lappy or internet facility so I did not try to find out the answer even after coming back. I lost that attempt in a few marks difference and I was feeling bad for skipping that one question.

Later when Dasavataram was released I got a chance to watch the pirated version of the movie. I being a great Thalaivar fan, by default always carried an illogical and insensible hatred towards Kamal’s movie, though it was not so serious. I generally use to avoid pirated versions but I was convinced that since it is Kamal’s movie it is fine to watch the pirated version. The very introduction struck me hardly where Kamal narrates about how the flapping of the wings by a small butterfly can create vibrations leading to the massive tectonic plates disturbances and create huge havoc.

As the movie got over I immediately visited a browsing center and searched for the butterfly effect. It is an effect under Chaos theory proving that each and every element or activity in the universe is interrelated. This was the question which I was not able to answer and was simply explained by Kamal in Dasavataram. If I have seen the movie before my interview definitely I would have explained and secured a bit more marks and even would have secured a service. Apart from this insight, another thing that impacted me was the mindblowing performance of Kamal in ten different roles. The hard work and determination he has invested is not an easy task. I felt bad for watching that masterpiece in piracy and as a token of apology, I went to the theatre and watched the movie twice.
