Diwali is a fest of savings and pride to me
Diwali is one festival that brings the utmost joy to the people of India because even if we want to stay away from it, the sound of crackers will definitely reach our ears and create a sense of celebration mood automatically. It gives pleasure to people celebrating it and also to those who are witnessing these celebrations. In the North, it is celebrated in the memory of the return of Lord Ram and Sita to Ayodhya after winning over Raavan, in the south it is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Krishna and Sathya Bama over Narakasura, thus depicting a moral of victory of good over the bad.

My father, as I registered in earlier articles, is an ardent Periyar follower, so he clings to the point that Narakasura is a Dravidian who was killed by Lord Krishna who is supposed to be an Aryan. With this funny sarcasm, he always marks Diwali as a ‘Black day’ to the Dravida people. But already I have registered that he was not a blind pseudo-Periyarist, so keeping away his sarcasm he inculcated a positive thought of making the girl children of the house burst the cracker and lit the ray of prosperity to the house on the ‘Day of lights’. For this, he wakes us up around 4’O clock in the morning and makes us burst the cracker even before bathing.

Another most excellent thought of our father made me and my sister cultivate a wonderful habit of saving. Exactly on the day of Diwali, my father gifts us a ‘Hundi’ that is a piggy bag and offers us an amount as the first saving. From then every month after receiving his salary he uses to offer us some amount of money to save. This continues for around one year till next Diwali. Inbetween when relatives and family friends visit our house they also use to gift us some amount of money while bidding farewell. Each and every penny we receive will be added to the hundi as a saving.

Ten days before Diwali, we use to break the hundi with sheer joy to count our savings. We then go for Diwali shopping and the entire family shopping will be covered with the amount saved by both of us. This habit makes us feel proud because for the entire year the bill is on our parents but for Diwali, it is us who buys clothes for the entire family. This excellent practice by our father made us know the benefit of saving, apparently not to spend money uselessly. Also sowed a sense of responsibility in looking after the needs of the family with pride. So without giving pages of lectures this is how our father taught us life lessons.

Diwali is not only a fest of colors, sounds, and happiness but a day of morals like savings and responsibility towards the family for us. Along with that, a collective responsibility has added to all the people not to pollute our surroundings. So it will be good if we burst crackers on the timings specified by the government and it will be much better to invent eco-friendly crackers thus not compromising between our celebration and the precious environment.
