Periyar's advice to Appa

After quitting MBBS, my Appa did bachelor's degree in Economics and chose to take part in the Sub Inspector selection process. He was basically an athlete. So, though he was sure about the physical test, he was not very confident about the written test. And people around him scared him more by telling him that even if he was able to clear the written test, he might need a recommendation from some influential person.

During college days, Appa used to be the Chairman and Boys hostel Secretary. And his favourtie Chief guest who he always invites for the cultural events is none other than the great legend Periyar. Under his influence, Appa became an atheist and he developed a strong opposition towards caste discrimination. So, he had contacts with some of the associates of Periyar. Through them, he reached Periyar and requested his recommendation.

Periyar promised him that he would definitely recommend it but he just wanted Appa to wait for the results. And luckily, Appa got selected on merit. As a token of respect, Appa visited Periyar to let him know about the results and seek his blessings. Periyar was very glad and he gave Appa three valuable pieces of advice

  1. Don’t receive bribes.

  2. Don’t make fake charges and cases.

  3. Don’t harm the poor.

Appa promised Periyar that he would follow them until the end of his service, and he did the same. As a token of love, Periyar gifted his photo to Appa. Appa framed and hung it up and he used to pay respect to Periyar every year on his birth anniversary, that is September 17th.
