A worth enough to cherish for life experience in Tamilnadu Police Academy || Cop in blood and nerve

21st October is being celebrated as Police Commemoration Day as an act of paying respect to the brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives while in service. On this great occasion, as a proud daughter of a great police officer and as an aspirant who had the great ambition of becoming an IPS officer myself, I would like to share a valuable experience I underwent at Tamilnadu Police Academy which is located near Vandalur, Chennai.

It was ten years before when I was totally shattered by the heavy loss of losing my father and my ambition together, I got a precious opportunity to take part in a program called “Citizen Cop” arranged by an NGO named PCVC in collaboration with the Tamilnadu Police. It was a five days program in which the organization selected a few school-going students of higher secondary level and were imparted a basic level training about the police and the working method of the department.

The project coordinator was my well-wisher so I had the opportunity to take part in the program since I was a UPSC aspirant by then. We all were given a commando-type uniform with a whistle, cap, and heavy boots and almost looked like National Security Guards. We were guided by the police personnel to various departments like Bomb squad, Police dog squad, fire service, traffic control, counterfeit currency detection, and prevention, etc. The personnel explained how every department receives complaints and takes action over it. There were live demonstrations also by the policemen and made the students also take part in it.

I was so amazed to witness the way of work by the greatest department of our country. It was really an eye-opening one. The most exciting was the bomb and dog squad. I was stunned to know that there are almost 8 - 10 ways of finding counterfeit currencies that the common man is not much aware of. The most interesting one about it was the pattern of hair curls of Gandhiji printed on notes makes it unique because it is hard to copy the exact pattern. We had useful seminars from experts related to the police and the safety of the people. They also conducted a one-day course on giving first-aid and provided with certificates.

On the last day of the program, we had an opportunity to interact with Mr.Radhakrishnan, the then city commissioner of Chennai. He provided us with an identity card named “Citizen cop” valid for one year, with which we can spot out any crime occurring in our surroundings and had the authority to question and communicate about it to the nearby police station. I was not able to fulfill my dream of becoming a police officer but this five days training definitely was slight healing to that wound which I can cherish for my lifetime. I extend my salute to all great policemen who sacrificed their lives for the service of the country.

Chk out
