How far can you go for your love? || The White Masai - True story
The most striking question posed on the people who are fallen in love is “ How far can you go for your love? “ And at times we may get sarcastic replies like heroes going for their ladylove to America or Allepy can only be seen in Gautam Vasudev Menon’s movies, taking the literal meaning of the question. On that note, a true story has happened but here to our wonder, a ladylove has flapped her wings sans borders, language, culture for the love she had grown for her man. The name of the movie is “The White Masai”, one of the most impactful movies I have seen and would like to share my experiences.
Since I use to stay alone at night times I do watch TV and will fall asleep as the TV is on. At times I used to wake up around 3.30 A.M or 4 A.M and will not feel sleepy. So I used to watch TV and will fall asleep again. One such day, I suddenly woke up around 3.45 A.M and was not feeling sleepy at all. I was switching between the channels and that is when suddenly I saw a scene in a movie where I witnessed a Masai tribe. My interest in tribes made me stop and watch the movie. It was a channel telecasting world movies.
Soon I started understanding the plot where the heroine Carola has set off to Africa on a holiday with her fiance. One day they happened to meet two Masai tribes dressed up in their traditional attire. Carola was attracted to one of the tribes called Lemalian. She and her fiance click a picture with them and get departed but Carola could not take her mind off from Lemalian. She was so attracted to the magnificent physique of the tribe. When the next day they reach the airport to return back to their hometown in Swiz, Carola realizes that she has developed a love for Lemalian and decides to stay back.
When she starts looking for him she gets to know that he is a warrior of Samburu village and has left to his place. She decides to travel across and reach him. In the town side, she meets another European lady who also fell in love with an African and eventually gets married to him and stays there. When she comes to know about the love of Carola she warns her that the culture of Masai tribes is totally different and she cannot stay there happily. But Carola stands firm for her love. The message of her stay reaches Lemalian who then visits Carola. Both start to live together. Carola decides to marry Lemalian so she takes his consent and goes back to Swiz to sell her shop and collects the money.
As she returns Lemalian takes her to his village where she was received with wonder and love. Initially, everything goes well and she enjoys her stay there. But eventually, the clash of culture arises when she encounters the ritual of female circumcision done with the blade for a teen girl, and when she tries to stop it Lemalian starts quarreling with her. Later Carola decides to buy a second-hand car and plans to open a grocery shop in the village with the money she has. Meanwhile, a lady who gives a breech birth needs medical assistance Carola decides to take her to the town hospital in her car and asks her husband’s help which he refuses to do stating that the lady is cursed. Slowly the clash of culture starts erupting between the two.
Carola’s friendly nature with the customers visiting the shop makes Lemalian feel possessive about her and he also suspects her to be in an illegal affair. He also distributes the groceries for free to his village people ruining the business. Meantime Carola gives birth to a baby girl but the quarrel between the couple gets on increasing day by day. Carola feels exhausted and decides to visit her hometown along with her child for a break of two weeks. Lemalian fears that she may not return back but as Carola insists firmly he gives consent half-heartedly. As both Carola and her daughter leave the village, Lemalian stands back starring the bus and the movie ends.
I was very much impressed with the movie and started collecting details about it. And that is when I came to know that it is based on an autobiographical novel written by German writer Corinne Hoffman, the real Carola who traveled so far in her life for her Masai warrior Lketinga. I immediately bought the book and while reading it I found it more impressive and interesting than the movie. The way she has narrated will make you feel as if you are also traveling along with her. She has vividly explained her real-time experiences which are more thrilling and were so impactful. She has also authored three more books about her liking for Africa and her reunion which are in my cheque list to be read soon.
