Things the name Abdul Kalam reminds me || My familiarity about him

APJ Abdul Kalam - One of the greatest inspirations of India in the contemporary period. In this article, I am not to share his biography but would like to share my familiarity with him. In May 1998, suddenly the country went to an excitement mode on announcing the nuclear power of India to the world. One man was celebrated by the entire nation for the successful Pokhran nuclear test II and entitled him as the ‘Missile Man of India’ and that was the honorable scientist Abdul Kalam.

I was at my adolescent age and knew nothing about missiles or nuclear power but what really attracted me was the news that this man has over-smarted the famous CIA intelligence and earned the country a remarkable position in the field of Space. From nowhere the students of the country started thronging upon him and got inspired by him because he was a great scientist but more than that was a great teacher. In 2002 he was made the 11th president of the country for his great contribution to the country, soon he became the people’s president through his innocent smile and eye-opening speeches.

I still remember, in 2004 when I and my friends went to Delhi for civil services preparation we had that Tamil affinity towards him. Whenever we had doubts about our subjects, we use to have fun thinking about calling Abdul Kalam to clear our doubts. During our free time, we use to visit Rashtrapathi Bhavan and use to hold the gates and felt like shouting aloud his name. For no reason, we were happy that he was the president then. The security guards clearly understood that we are from Tamilnadu and use to smile at us. During that period the birthday gifts will be either “Wings of Fire” or “Ignited Minds” because that was his inspiration level among youngsters. This bonding between him and the students made the UN commemorate his birth anniversary on October 15 as “World Students Day”

I owe a lot to him because I used mostly his quotes while writing essays or general topics in the UPSC and TNPSC mains examinations as the introduction. What I feel is the best of his suggestions is, first one is to dream to achieve something big and the second one is to plant trees which is the much-needed one presently. Here I remember a movie called “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” in which the hero to impress his ladylove admits that he is a Gandhian but knows nothing about Gandhiji. To save his love he decides to learn about Gandhi and gets obsessed with ending up in hallucination by which whenever he thinks of a Gandhian ideology he imagines that Gandhiji himself to appear directly and utter those words.

In a scene where the hero is to deliver a speech on Gandhiji among the elderly people residing in the house of the heroine, a person tells that he witnessed a youngster throwing a stone at the statue of Gandhiji and felt very awkward. He questions what his reaction should have been. The imaginary Gandhi replies beautifully that “Break all my statues around the country, throw away my images from the houses and offices, and if you want to really honor me then always remember my image and ideologies in your mind, that is enough”. The same thing I would like to suggest to honor Abdul Kalam and if we really want to respect him then best is to realize his “Vision 2020” and the easiest is to at least plant a sapling on his remembrance.
